Men's Tennis Takes On Southeastern Louisiana in SLC Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 4 seeded Lamar University men's tennis team opens the 2007 Southland Conference tournament on Friday, taking on the No. 5 seed Southeastern Louisiana at 3:30 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas San Antonio.

The Cards enter the tournament with an 8-12 season record and a 3-3 record in SLC play. The Lions enter Friday's match with a season record of 10-10, and a conference record of 2-4.

Junior Filip Kanczula has led the way for the Cardinals this season, posting an 11-6 overall record, while going 2-3 in Conference play at No. 1 singles. Mario Janjic has also had a solid season for Lamar, posting a 10-7 overall record, and a 2-3 mark in SLC play.

David Wanja, who earned second team all Southland Conference honors at No. 4 singles, had the most success for LU during the conference schedule, posting a 3-2 record. The doubles tandem of Janjic and Andres Medina, who also earned second team all-SLC honors were also solid this season, posting a 3-2 record.

In their only meeting of the season, the Cardinals knocked off the Lions 4-3 in Hammond, La. Lamar won the doubles point and won at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles

The winner of Friday's match will take on top seed and undefeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The men's tournament begins at 1:30 p.m. with No. 3 seed and host UTSA taking on No. 6 seed UT-Pan American. Saturday's action will get underway at 1:30 p.m. and the tournament will wrap up on Sunday with the championship match at 2:30 p.m.
