BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University senior Carlos Valdenebro was named a first-team All-Southland Conference selection for men's tennis the conference announced today.

Valdenebro (Sevilla, Spain) earned the honor at No. 4 singles after posting a 5-0 record in conference play. Last season, Valdenebro was a second-team selection at No. 3 doubles with teammate Diego Snyder.

"I'm very happy for Carlos," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. "That was one of his goals this season, and he worked extremely hard to reach it."

Valdenebro was 10-7 overall this season, tying Rob Lee for the team lead in singles victories. Valdenebro finished the season strong by going 8-2 in his last 10 matches.

"Carlos did a great job balancing his athletics and his academics," Shankles said. "He had a tough academic schedule as he pursues his degree in mechanical engineering, so he often had to practice late, but he put in an incredible number of hours, he didn't just do the minimum. He's the hardest worker on the team."
