BEAUMONT - After falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a week ago, the Lamar men's tennis team will have revenge in mind on Saturday morning as the Cardinals will play host to the Islanders in the Southland Conference Championship Tournament at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
The Cards (4-16, 2-3 SLC) are looking to pick up their first SLC Tournament win since a 4-2 decision over Southeastern Louisiana in 2007. This also marks the first trip that the Red and White have made to the conference championships since a loss to the Islanders in 2011.
The play of Rob Lee and Carl-Philip Lindqvist will be key if the Cardinals are to advance, and the duo is coming off an all-conference caliber singles campaign. Lee, just the fourth SLC First Teamer from Lamar since re-joining the league in 1999, posted a 3-2 record in conference play this season. Lindqvist, who was named to the second team, went 2-3 as well, becoming the first LU freshman to be honored as such since 2002.
In last week's encounter, LU lost each singles match, falling 6-0 to the host Islanders.
However, the Cards have been better in Beaumont and enter on a three-match home winning streak. Each of the previous two meetings have taken place at the Municipal Tennis Center, with the Cards dispatching conference foes Oral Roberts and Texas-Pan American in 6-1 and 4-3 fashion, respectively.
First serve in Saturday's semifinal match is set for 10 a.m.
