Men's Tennis aims for success at TJC

Sept. 19, 2013

BEAUMONT - The Lamar men's tennis team will open its 2013 fall slate on Friday as the Cardinals get set for a trio of matches at the Tyler Junior College Fall Quad Match in Tyler, Texas.

Four Cards are set to make the trip this weekend, including Nikita Lis, who will be making his Cardinal debut. Sophomores Trey Crysel, Carl-Philip Lindqvist and Steven McMullan are also slated to compete.

Lis, a native of Kaliningrad, Russia, has been ranked as high as seventh in his native country and made the trek to Texas after winning a number of Tennis Europe and ITF Junior events. Lindqvist became the first freshman to be named to an All-Southland team in over a decade after his campaign in 2013, and the Texan duo of Crysel and McMullan are looking to build off their opening seasons.

The event is structured much like a dual match will be in the fall, but just on a smaller scale. Head coach Scott Shankles feels this better helps his team prepare for how things will be after the fall season. Each of the four players will participate in singles matches vs. each opponent as well as a pair of doubles matches.

"We can really focus on transitioning right from doubles into singles, and that's important," Shankles said. "We don't get to do that at most fall events, but we have to do it all spring. I think the guys are very prepared for this and psyched to get things going. This is the beginning of a long journey, and hopefully this will help get the nerves out of the way so we can continue improving."

Also competing in the event will be Midwestern State, Ouachita Baptist and host Tyler Junior College. The matches are scheduled to begin on Friday before wrapping up on Saturday.
