BEAUMONT - After going through two weeks of practice, head coach Scott Shankles is looking forward to taking his men's tennis team on the road to begin the 2012 fall season this weekend at the TJC Fall Quad Match which will feature teams from Tyler Junior College and SMU.
Instead of the traditional tournament that is in place for most fall events, the Cardinals will be participating in dual events on Saturday and Sunday, which Shankles believes will help the program when the spring season rolls around.
"It's going to be just like what we play in the spring, but it will just be individual scoring instead of team scoring," Shankles explained. "When you play in this format, it gives you more of an idea of what you'll face in the spring as opposed to a tournament where you can kind of build some momentum as it goes on. In this format, you only get that one chance against a team, and I think it will help prepare us for later on down the road."
Making the trip for the Cardinals will be freshmen Carl-Philip Lindqvist and Steven McMullan and sophomores Bruno Snyder and Mikko Rajamaki.
"We're really trying to get our younger guys a little more experience," Shankles said. "It's interesting because the sophomores that I have going both missed the fall season last year. So it will be a new experience for both of them as well as the freshmen. That's why it's great that we're starting out with this type of event. It's not really that strenuous, and it will let them get their feet wet and get used to the competition."
Lamar will open up play on Saturday with a match against a team from TJC at 9 a.m. before returning later in the afternoon against SMU at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Cards will take on a second TJC squad before returning home to Beaumont.
