BEAUMONT, Texas -
The Lamar University men's and women's tennis teams will both compete in tournaments on the road this weekend.
The men open their fall season by taking part in the Southern Mississippi Fall Invite in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Saturday and Sunday. The women will participate in their second tournament this fall as they will be at the Northwestern State Open in Natchitoches, La., from Friday through Sunday.
"I think the guys are eager to see some competition," men's coach Scott Shankles said. "We've worked hard at practice, and this will give us a good opportunity to see how much we've improved."
The Lady Cardinals had a strong showing at last weekend's Islander Open in Corpus Christi, Texas, with the doubles team of Natalia Mayagoitia and Carolina Salas reaching the finals, and Mayagoitia reaching the semifinals in singles.
"I was happy with the way we started the season," Lamar women's tennis coach David Wong said. "We're going to keep getting better."
This weekend's tournaments will have no team competition. Southland Conference tennis competition is in the spring.
