The Lamar University men's tennis team closed out the fall campaign over the weekend, taking part in the 2006 Ragin' Cajun Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana Lafayette.
In the Red Singles draw, Filip Kanczula was the only Cardinal to collect a win, as he defeated Ivan Availa of UT-Pan American 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 before being ousted by eventual champion Danny Bryan of LSU 6-4, 6-2. Maciej Bogusz was defeated by Dusan Tabak of Louisiana Lafayette 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the opening round, as was Mario Jancic who was knocked off by Eric Deroche of LSU.
In the red consolation bracket Jancic defeated Matthieu Leboucher of Southeastern Louisiana 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 before being eliminated by eventual consolation champ Abhaya Prakaah of Alcorn State. Bogusz was knocked out in his consolation match, falling to Brett Bernstein of UTPA 6-3, 6-1.
In the singles white draw, several Cardinals made their presence known in the early rounds, led by David Wanja who knocked off Daniel Ferias of UTPA 6-1, 6-1 before falling to Sashank Kulkarni of Alcorn 6-2, 6-0. Brett Sticker knocked off Oliver Zieleniecki of SELA 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 before falling to eventual champion Ondrej Krivka of SELA. Tyler Cobb collected a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rosendo Cantu of UTPA before being downed by Jorge Delgado of ULL and Devin Harley was defeated in the third round by Zack Taylor of ULL 6-2, 6-0.
Andres Medina, who was knocked out of the white draw in the opening round made a run to the championship match of the consolation bracket. He opened the consolation bracket with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniel Farias of UTPA and advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Michael Okada of Alcorn. Ben Melancon of ULL eventually won the consolation championship.
The Cardinal men will be in action again in January, when they open the spring schedule.
