BEAUMONT - Head coach Scott Shankles announced the addition of yet another international talent to the Lamar men's tennis program on Wednesday as South African Jeandre Hoogenboezem was inked for the fall of 2013.
Hoogenboezem will be making the more than 9,000-mile journey from Amanzimtoti, a town just south of Durban, and he'll be looking to build on a growing junior career. As of his signing, Hoogenboezem was ranked 16th in South Africa and was a member of a number of youth national teams. He is also an acclaimed field hockey player.
"Jeandre is very athletic, and I was really impressed with his junior career despite playing in less tournaments than most of his peers due to field hockey," Shankles said. "He's one of the best players in South Africa, and he's going to do well in singles for us, but he'll be even better in doubles."
Hoogenboezem took home the U18 National Championship in doubles in 2010.
Off the court, Hoogenboezem has been recognized for his academic achievement at Glenwood High School, and he is planning to major in mechanical engineering at Lamar.
"Our engineering program really helped us," Shankles said. "In addition to everything else, our program here helped solidify us at the top of his list."
