HOUSTON - The Lamar University men's and women's track teams had another solid weekend, running at the 2008 Victor Lopez Bayou Classic at Rice University, grabbing 18 top 10 finishes.

The meet was highlighted by the men's 4x400 meter relay team which crossed the line in first place. The team of Jerel Massenburge, Julius Kasule, Michael Fisher and Greg Williams took the top spot in a time of 3:16.13. The women's 4x400 also had a solid performance with a second place finish. Ashley Smith, Toni Sylvester, Jessika Johnson and Brittany Pollard ran a 3:49.76 to capture the second spot.

Lamar was also solid in the 4x100 meter relays with both teams claiming fourth place finishes. The men's team of Michael Gauthier, JaMarkus Tolbert, Stephen Boon and Kasule clocked a 41.94 while the women's team of Johnson, Smith, Porsche Williams and Megan Bibbs ran a 48.08.

The best women's individual finish was a third place performance by Mayfield in the 400 meter hurdles. The senior ran a 1:04.11 to finish third, while Angel Bassett crossed the line in seventh place in a time of 1:05.58.

The top men's individual performance was turned in by Massenburge who finished in their place in the 400 meter dash. The freshman turned in a career-best 48.33 performance while fellow freshman Williams and Kasule also ran career-bests. Kasule ran to a seventh place finish with a 49.02 performance while Williams finished in eighth place in a time of 49.18.



Clerc Koenck continued her record setting 2007-08 year with a fourth place performance in the 800 meter run. She grabbed the fourth place finish with a 2:11.82 performance which is the top performance in school history. Her time is five one hundredths of a second better than the previous record run of 2:11.87 run by Ulrika Hellstrom in 1993.

In the women's 100 meter hurdles Johnson notched a fifth place finish in a time of 14.45. In the women's 400 meter dash Pollard finished in 56.46 seconds for an eighth place finish while Sylvester crossed in 10th place in a time of 56.88.

In the men's 800 meter run Ewan Simpson grabbed a sixth place in a time of 1:54.08 finish. Gauthier placed seventh in the men's 100 meter dash in a time of 10.92 and Boone grabbed a ninth place finish in the men's 110 meter hurdles in a time of 16.05.

In the only field event action of the meet, Tolbert notched a ninth place finish in the men's triple jump with a leap of 13.57 meters.

The LU track team will be back in action when they run at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. and the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. The LU sprinters will compete at the Texas Relays while the distance runners will travel to California.
