The Lamar University men's and women's track teams closed out the Southland Conference men's and women's outdoor track and field championships Monday evening by winning three individual titles, one in the men's competition and two on the women's side.
In the team competition, the Lady Cards placed sixth with 63 points, while the Cardinal men finished in tenth place with 23 points.
Clerc Koenck picked up the first title of the day for the Lady Cardinals by winning the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:36.60. She pulled ahead of the field with 200 meters to go, and held off a late charge by Texas State's Yulia Stashkiv for the title.
Immediately following Koenck's championship performance, Danny Shaw captured the 1,500 meter crown in the men's competition with a time of 3:57.65. Shaw and UT-Arlington's Jacob Cedertun pulled away from the pack in the final 400 meters, and Shaw outlasted Cedertun to the finish line for the victory.
Ewan Simpson and Austin Turnbull picked up ninth and 11th place in the 1,500, running times of 4:04.90 and 4:13.73 respectively.
Chinelo Nwobu successfully defended her title in the women's 400 meter dash, running a 54.10. The 400 was a closely contested race, as Nwobu edged out Tiffany Singleton of Sam Houston, Katrina Roundtree of Stephen F. Austin and Liudmila Litvinova of Texas State for the championship. The top four runners in the race all ran regional qualifying times.
Toni Sylvester also ran well for the Lady Cardinals in the 400, grabbing a sixth place finish with a 55.18 performance.
In the women's 5,000 meter run, Renee Graham posted a third place finish with a time of 17:08.93, while Amanda King took fourth place with a 17:20.61. Also scoring in the event for Lamar was Koenck, who finished in seventh place with a time of 17:54.20.
Nwobu scored another point for the Lady Cardinals, grabbing an eighth place finish in the 200 meter dash, running a 26.35. Jessika Johnson
added a point for the Lady Cardinals with an eighth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles, running a 14.21.
Hamish Meacheam scored for the second time in the meet for the Cardinal men, grabbing a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meter run with a time of a 15:05.03. Meacheam added the fourth place finish to his fifth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase
In the men's 4 x 400 meter relay, Damien Broomes, Philip Thornton, Stephen Boone and Johnny Lennon ran a season-best time of 3:14.33, good for fifth place place.
The women's 4 x 400 relay team of Sylvester, Porsche Williams, Kayla LeBlanc and Nwobu ran a 3:52.23, coming in eighth place.
