BATON ROUGE, La. - The Lamar men's track and field team joins a field of over 20 teams on Saturday, as the Cardinals open the 2005 indoor season at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational in Carl Maddox Field House.

The meet is slated to begin with field events at 9:30 a.m., while running events are scheduled to follow at 11 a.m.

The Cardinals join a field that includes five other Southland Conference schools, including Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana. In addition to host LSU, several regional schools such as Tulane, Southern Mississippi and New Orleans will also be in attendance.

A host of new athletes will begin their Lamar careers on Saturday with five on the men's side and 15 on the women's team.

New Zealand native Hamish Meacheam turned in one of the men's best finishes with a third-place showing in the 5,000 meters with a 16:08.69. Junior Travis Tolbert was fourth in the same event after clocking a 16:32.41.

The LU men return to action on Friday, Jan. 21 when they travel to Houston for the Leonard Hilton Invitational.
