BEAUMONT – With just three weeks left until the Southland Indoor Championships, the Lamar track teams will see a number of athletes close out their respective regular seasons on Friday as the Cardinals hit the road to nearby McNeese State to compete at the Jeff Davis Invitational.

The meet will feature nine other schools, including Southland foes McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls as well as future conference opponents Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and New Orleans. Grambling, Louisiana and Southern will round out the field.

Twenty-four male athletes will be donning the Red and White on Friday, and Ryan Creech will be looking to pick up where he left off last week. The native of Cork, Ireland, took home the 5,000 meter crown at the Howie Ryan Invitational & Multi’s on the campus of Houston, but this time around, he’ll be looking to repeat the feat in the 3,000 meter race.

Noticeably absent will be reigning Southland Track Athlete of the Week Joe Wade, who will be sitting out after taking home the mile crown in each of the past two competitions.

On the women’s side, there will be 16 competitors, including Becky Gough. The graduate student earned a title of her own at McNeese just two weeks ago, winning the mile race, and she’ll be looking to do the same this time around. She is also scheduled to compete in the 3,000 meter run.

Following the Jeff Davis Invitational, a select number of athletes will travel to either the Husky Invitational in Seattle or the Tyson Invitational on the campus of Arkansas next week. Following that, the teams will next compete at the SLC Championships, which are set to begin on February 22 in Norman, Okla.

The meet will begin Friday afternoon at Ralph O. Ward Recreation Complex on the campus of McNeese State University.
