Track set to compete in Seattle and Fayetteville
Feb. 7, 2013
BEAUMONT – Seven athletes from Lamar’s track and field teams will be looking to represent the school on a big stage this weekend at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash., and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Idunoba will be running the 200 meter dash for the first time this season after setting a school record in the event last year with a time of 24.12 seconds, and Douglas will compete in the long jump. Douglas’ mark of 18 feet, 11.75 inches last month moved her up to second on the all-time performers list and ranks as the third-best in the Southland this season.
On the men’s side, freshmen Nick Fyffe and Johnathan Reece will compete in the triple jump and high jump, respectively. Reece currently boasts of the second-best mark in the conference this season after topping six feet, 8.75 inches last month at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston.
“We’re looking for big performances out of all four athletes as we get ready for the conference meet,” said Jake Cohen, LU’s jumps and multis coach. “They are all in their best event, and the Tyson Invitational is a great meet with some of the best competition in the country. This is a way for the kids to show what they’re made of and really shine.”
Douglas will begin her weekend on Friday afternoon, and the rest of the squad will compete on Saturday.
“Joe has been running very well this season with two victories so far,” distance coach Darren Gauson said. “This is a chance for him to run in an elite field and gain some momentum for a very competitive field at the conference championships. Sam came in a little banged up, but he’s gained a lot of momentum after running really well on Friday at McNeese. Matt hasn’t been able to compete so far, so we’re trying to get him in a position to score at the conference meet.”
