After turning in one of the best 5,000 meter run performances in the NCAA this season, Lamar University junior Samuel Kosgei was named the Southland Conference Indoor Track Athlete of The Week.
Kosgei ran to a second place finish in section three of the men's 5,000 on Saturday, posting a time of 13:54.19. The performance shattered his own school record of 14:22.97 which he ran last season, and is the only sub 14 minute 5,000 in Lamar University history. His performance ranks 11th in the NCAA this season and is the second fastest time in Southland Conference history.
This is the first track athlete of the week honor for Kosgei and the fifth overall weekly award of his career at Lamar. He was named cross country athlete of the week two times this year and earned the distinction two times during the 2006 season.
Kosgei, along with the rest of the LU track team, will be back in action on Friday and Saturday when they head to Houston for the SLC Indoor Championship, hosted at the Yeoman Field House at the University of Houston.
