BEAUMONT, Texas -
The Lamar women's team is led by sophomore Sam Walkow, who has posted conference-best times in the mile run (4 minutes, 59.50 seconds) and the 3,000 meters (9:54.52). Lamar's Taylor Cloy has the second-best times in the mile and 3,000 meters this season.
On the men's side, Lamar's Joe Wade qualified for the conference championships in the 800 meters, the mile and the 3,000 meters. Twin brother Tom Wade qualified for the mile as well.
The UTSA men's team has won the last five Southland Indoor Championships and will be looking to tie Lamar's streak of six straight titles (1980-85). This year the Roadrunners hold four of the top marks in field competitions, highlighted by sophomores Keith Benford and Richard Garrett.
Other men's indoor track and field athletes competing at the Southland Indoor meet include UT Arlington senior sprinter Cordero Gray, Southeastern Louisiana thrower Adonson Shallow and Stephen F. Austin hurdler Nick McCloud.
Gray has the top time in the conference in both the 60-meter dash (6.67) and 200-meter dash (21.08). Those times were also good enough to be the 18th and 20th best marks nationally, respectively.
Shallow, the reigning two-time Southland Conference Outstanding Field Performer, has the best weight throw mark in the conference (68 feet, 10 inches) and ninth-best in the country. Shallow also has the second-best distance in the shot put (58-2.5) in the conference.
In the women's competition, Stephen F. Austin returns in search of its third consecutive Southland indoor track and field title after scoring 151 points last year in Norman.
The Ladyjacks are led by junior sprinter Mary Dickerson, who has the top time (55.29) in the 400m in the conference and the third-fastest mark in the 200m (24.51). Freshman hurdler Chelsea Stephen and junior high jumper Carrie Hahn also come into the meet with the top marks in their respective events.
Stephen's 8.60 in the 60m hurdles and Hahn's 5-5.75 in the high jump lead the Southland Conference entering Friday's competition.
Other notable athletes competing this weekend are Northwestern State senior thrower Trecey Rew and UTSA freshman sprinter Jhordan Hunter.
