BEAUMONT, Texas -
Lamar University's Matt Johnsen and Ryan Creech were honored by the Southland Conference for their athletes in the men's indoor track season, the conference announced today.
Johnsen (Broulee, Australia) was named the Outstanding Runner, while Creech (Cork, Ireland) received the Freshman of the Year Award.
Johnsen won the men's 5,000 meters at the Southland Conference Championships in a time of 14 minutes, 40.74 seconds, almost 10 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. In addition, Johnsen placed second in the 3,000 meters in 8:26.36.
Creech had a solid first year for the Cardinals, placing third in the 5,000 meters (14:57.72) and eighth in the 3,000 meters (8:35.13).
Both of these young men had outstanding seasons," Lamar coach Trey Clark said. "It's always an honor when other coaches from the Southland Conference recognize their accomplishments."
Clark also coached the Freshman of the Year in men's cross country this season, Sam Stabler, who is also a member of the indoor track squad.
