BEAUMONT – The Lamar men’s and women’s track and field teams will continue their outdoor season on Saturday as a number of Cardinals will participate at the Sam Houston State Quad Meet in Huntsville.

“Any time that Sam Houston puts on a meet, we try to go up there and compete,” head coach Trey Clark said. “The head coach was a teammate of mine at Lamar, and we make the trip up there almost every time we get the chance. This is a good opportunity to get everybody back into competition.”

After last weekend’s Texas Relays and Stanford Invitational, this weekend’s meet offers the first chance for a number of Lamar athletes to compete since last month’s Victor Lopez Bayou Classic at Rice.

Also competing at the meet will be Houston Baptist, Sam Houston State and Texas Southern.

“It’s a pretty small meet, but I’m pretty excited about it,” Clark explained. “I feel that some of these big competitions don’t really let you get in and work on some things with the athletes. A quad meet allows us to get in there and get some good experience and move on.”

“We’re still going to be feeling some things out this weekend,” Clark continued. “A few of the kids won’t be competing in their primary events, but this is another chance to see where we’re at and work on that through the course of the season.”

At least 30 Cardinals are scheduled to compete, beginning with thrower Denisha Nichols and pole vaulters Leslie Beard, Cody Williams and Jared Parker. Beard, a sophomore out of Lumberton, is coming off of an indoor season where she broke her own school record with a height of 12 feet, 1.5 inches at the Southland Indoor Championships.

A number of jumpers will also look to make an impression, led by Lady Cards Erin Brown, Beatrice Douglas and Carissa Hill. Douglas and Brown became the second- and third-best indoor performers in school history at the conference meet earlier this season, and Hill is in the middle of her first outdoor season for LU.

On the men’s side, Robert Badillo, Nick Fyffe and Austin Powell will compete.

In the distance group, both Sam Bradley and Joe Wade will start with the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the latter of which is the defending conference champion in the event. Sam Stabler and Ryan Creech will also look to build on their Cardinal legacy, and Ash Harrell will make his collegiate debut in the Red and White.

Idara Effiong will run in the 800.

For the women, Becky Gough, the SLC’s reigning indoor 3,000 champion, will run in the 1,500 along with Claire Miles. Miles will also take part in the 5,000, and Kim Campbell is set to compete in the 800.

Ashley Idunoba, who entered the 2013 season with back-to-back outdoor 200 meter dash titles, will lead the LU sprinters. Also joining her in the 200, among other scheduled races, are Shakevia Fleeks, Elzbieta Gawron, Chasity Peters, Sarah Shim and Sydney Wandix.

Saschelle Slaughter will participate in the 400.

TaMar and Zach Hicks, Trey Finnex and Ronnie Whitty will run for the men.

All events will take place at the Meredith York Field Events Center and Elliott T. Bowers Stadium. Field events are set to begin at 1:30 p.m., and running events will kick off at 6 p.m.
