SAN MARCOS, Texas -
The Lamar University men's track team got off to a good start at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track Championships on Friday.
The Cardinals had three runners place in the top eight of the men's 10,000 meters, the first men's event of the championships.
Lamar's Anthony Pequeno placed second in 31 minutes, 31.00 seconds. LU's Matt Johnsen was third in 31:35.56, while Alex DeLa Garza was eighth in 32:10.58. David Rooney of McNeese State won the event in 30:51.78.
Lamar collected 15 points to take the early lead in the team standings. McNeese State was second with 10 points.
In the women's 10,000 meters, Lamar's Angela LaBorde was 10th in 38:27.66.
Friday's other events are the men's and women's hammer and javelin throws as well as the first four events of the women's heptathlon and the first five events of the men's decathlon.
The championships continue through Sunday at Texas State University.
