The Lamar University men's and women's track teams head to Natchitoches, La., this weekend for the Southland Conference Outdoor Track Championships.
The competition runs Friday through Sunday at the Walter P. Ledet Track and Field Complex at Northwestern State University. League records and honors are on the line in addition to possible trips to the NCAA Regional Championships, May 26-28, in Bloomington, Ind. and Eugene, Ore. and eventually to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 8-11, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Lamar men's track program holds the Southland Conference records for team championships (10) and individual championships (124). The Cardinals are seeking their first team title since 1986.
Lamar's Joe Wade has the fastest time in the SLC in the men's 1500 meters this spring with a clocking of 3 minutes, 46.91 seconds. Twin brother Tom Wade has the third-fastest time in the SLC (3:49.67). The Wades are 1-2 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, with Tom posting a time of 8:48.60 and Joe turning in a time of 8:55.74.
Lamar's Anthony Pequeno has the fifth-fastest time in the men's 10,000 meters at 30:48.38.
On the women's side, Lamar's Ashley Idunoba has the fastest time in the SLC in the 200 meters at 23.92 seconds. Lamar's Sam Walkow owns the second-fastest time in the conference in the women's 5,000 meters at 17:07.33.
The Lady Cardinals are seeking their first SLC outdoor track title. Lamar has had 14 individual SLC champions in women's outdoor track.
