BEAUMONT – The Lamar men’s track team is set to send distance standouts Sam Stabler and Joe Wade to this weekend’s NCAA West Preliminaries at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
Stabler, a native of Queniborough, England, will try to get LU started off on a positive note on Thursday night as he’ll take part in the 1,500 prelims. The sophomore put up the third-best time in the Southland earlier this season at the Victor Lopez Rice Bayou Classic, completing the race in 3:46.59. In last year’s event, the Englishman ended 43rd at 4:04.36.
If Stabler advances to the finals of the event, he’ll run once more on Saturday afternoon for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships in Oregon next month.
Wade, who made the trip to Oregon last season, will be looking to do the same this season in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The Isle of Wight, England, native qualified for the event by posting a time of 8:56.41 at the Mt. SAC Relays. The former conference champion in the event saw his repeat bid fall short when he got hurt during the championship race earlier this month, but he bounced back to take home the 1,500 title a day later.
Wade, an All-America honorable mention in the race last season, will compete on Friday, and he’ll be looking to build on a strong Cardinal tradition that includes All-Americans Tom Wade, Joonas Harjamaki and Jonas Lundstrom as well as 1984 Olympian for Argentina Pedro Caceres.
