Lamar Men's Cross Country Team Picks Up Momentum At Pre-National Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Paced by top 100 finishes from Francis Kasagule and Drew Bean, the Lamar men's cross Country team finished 18th in its race at the 2009 Pre-National Meet, hosted by Indiana State at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center Saturday. Running their second 8,000-meter race of the season, Lamar scored 508 points and ran an average time of 25:08, the same pace from the Wisconsin adidas Invitational four weeks ago. Kasagule finished 27th with a time of 24:13 and Bean was 86th, crossing in 24:59. Joonas Harjamaki also ran well, scoring 101 points with a time of 25:09. "Joonas, Francis and Drew were solid for us and I am pleased with the effort we put forth today," coach Jake Stewart said. Bob Ahimbisbwe (25:23) and Alex De La Garza (25:57) each ran season-best times while Hillary Zamoei completed the course in 27:33. One measure of comparison for the Cardinals is their finish in relation to Illinois. The Illini finished 27 points ahead of LU in Wisconsin but just one ahead on Saturday. On the women's side, Sam Walkow finished the 6,000-meter tract in 23:01 anf 25th place. Karin Svennson was 40th in 23:19 and Emily Carpenter notched a 52nd place showing with a 23:37 time. "Sam had a great day," Stewart said. "She was 33rd with one thousand to go and moved up six spots. Karen and Emily had very good days as well."
Nora-Beth Saunders clocked a time of 24:20 and Daisy Cantu also went under 25 minutes with a 24:39. Sharon Sason came in with a time of 27:33 for the Lady Cards. "It was just a great experience for the girls to see this and be a part of a championship atmosphere. The learining we can do with this is exciting for us." Both LU squads will now turn their training focus to the Southland Conference Championships, which will be run in two weeks on Oct. 31 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Lamar Men
