BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University sophomore Matt Johnsen earned 2011 Division I All-Academic Cross Country honors the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today.

Johnsen (Broulee, Australia), who was the Southland Conference Student Athlete of the Year for men's cross country, carries a 3.31 grade-point average in kinesiology.

Johnsen led Lamar to its sixth consecutive Southland Conference championship by placing second at the conference meet with a time of 24 minutes, 51.3 seconds for eight kilometers. He followed that up with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regionals, qualifying for the NCAA championships, where he placed 89th.

Johnsen was one of 58 cross country runners nationwide who received the honor from the USTFCCCA. The award is determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest individually at the NCAA Championships. Johnsen was the only Southland Conference men's cross country runner to receive the award this season.
