BEAUMONT, Texas -
Lamar University's Tom Wade was named the Southland Conference men's cross country Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Wade, a graduate student from Isle of Wight, England, led Lamar to a season-opening victory at the University of Houston's Johnny Morriss Invitational on Friday. Wade was second overall in 15 minutes, 30.78 seconds for 3 miles. Lamar had six runners place in the top eight.
Last season, Wade ran track and cross country for Lamar. During the cross country campaign, he finished 15th at the Southland Conference Championships, helping Lamar win its fifth consecutive conference title. In outdoor track, he earned honorable mention All-America status in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
"It's a good way to start the year," Lamar coach Trey Clark said about his team's performance and Wade's honor. "We're right where we want to be."
The Lamar men's and women's track teams return to action on Sept. 16 at the John F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational in Houston.
