FRISCO, Texas – For the second time in three weeks, Matt Johnsen has been selected as the Southland Conference Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The award is the second for Johnsen this season after he split the honors two weeks ago with fellow Cardinal Alex De La Garza following their participation at the Cardinal Relays. It is the fourth time that the junior has earned the weekly designation.
Johnsen, a native of Broulee, Australia, was the top Southland finisher at the John F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational on Friday, completing the 6,000 meter race with a time of 16:48 to finish second. He also helped the Cardinals to an overall runner-up finish in the event, beating out fellow SLC members Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (fourth), McNeese State (fifth) and Sam Houston State (seventh).
Both Cardinal cross country teams will return to action on Saturday at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
