BEAUMONT – Prior to last week’s John F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational, head cross country coach Trey Clark stressed that the event was the first real race of the year, and this week, he’s ready to pick it up a notch as both teams hit the road for Baton Rouge to run at the LSU Invitational.

“We want to go in there and have a good, competitive effort,” Clark said. “It’s a longer race, so it will let me see where we are at this stage of the season. We expect to do well, but the main thing is that we continue to make progress for the end of the season and that we stay healthy.”

The men will run an 8,000 meter race, and the women will compete in a 6,000 meter event.

Earlier this week, Matt Johnsen took home his second Southland Athlete of the Week award for his performance at the Rice Invitational, but Clark believes the team could be even more successful with the additions of runners Sam Stabler and Ryan Creech to the squad.

“Sam and Ryan and didn’t run last week for us,” Clark said. “Sam was the Freshman of the Year last year in Cross Country, and Ryan got it during the indoor track season. I’m kind of interested to see where they are as sophomores and the progress that they’ve made.”

On the women’s side, Clark is looking forward to seeing how Claire Miles and Angela LaBorde bounce back from their showing at Rice. The duo finished 30th and 33rd, respectively, last week.

“I really want to see how Claire and Angela perform this week,” Clark said. “I don’t think they ran as well as they could have, so I’m going to be looking for them to have a better run than they did at Rice.”

The women will get things started for LU on Saturday with a scheduled start time of 8:05 a.m. at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge, and the men will run at 9:15.
