After leading the way for the Lamar men's cross country team at the Girak Invitational in Minnesota, Samuel Kosgei was named the Aeropostale cross country athlete of the week by the Southland Conference.
Kosgei is the first runner from Lamar to be honored as athlete of the week this season. Danny Shaw earned athlete of the week two times last season.
Kosgei, a sophomore from Kapchorwa, Uganda, led Lamar to a 12th place finish at one of the nations top meets, finishing the 8K race in 24:32.25 for a sixth place finish on a muddy course. Kosgei grabbed a top 10 finish in the meet which saw 10 of the top 30 finishers from the 2005 NCAA championship participating. Josh McDougal of Liberty, who finished fourth in last years NCAA championship, was the top men's gold finisher in a time of 24:14.05.
In addition to his success in Minnesota, Kosgei also ran strong at the Rice Invitational in Houston, where he finished second, covering the 6,000 meter course in 17:15.
Kosgei and the rest of the Cardinal men, along with the women's team will be in action again next Monday when they run in the NSU Invitational in Natchitoches, La.
