BEAUMONT, Texas -
Lamar University's Sam Stabler was named the Southland Conference Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year, while coach Trey Clark was named the Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.
Stabler, a native of Leicester, England, was the top freshman finisher at the Southland Conference Championships, placing 12th in 25 minutes, 34 seconds for eight kilometers.
Clark led the Cardinals to their sixth straight Southland Conference team title, as Lamar extended its conference record with 11 men's team championships.
The Cardinals had five runners named to the men's All-Conference team after they placed in the top 10 at the Southland Conference meet: Matt Johnsen, Tom Wade, Bob Ahimbisibwe, Joe Wade and Alex Pequeno.
Sam Walkow, who finished eighth in the women's race, was the only Lady Cardinal to receive All-Conference honors. The Lamar women finished third at the conference meet.
"I'm very proud of the way our student-athletes represented the university," Clark said. "They are deserving of all the accolades they receive."
The Lamar men's and women's teams will compete at the NCAA South Central Regionals on Nov. 12 in Waco, Texas.
