NACOGDOCHES, Texas –Lamar freshman Kiandra Bowers grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, but her efforts went for naught as the Lady Cardinals dropped a 64-43 decision to host Stephen F. Austin in the Southland Conference women’s basketball opener for both teams Thursday night.
Lamar (5-7 overall, 0-1 Southland) struggled with its shooting throughout the game. The Lady Cardinals shot just 25.4 percent (15-of-59) from the field, and connected on 21.4 percent of their shots from 3-point range (6-of-28). In addition, Lamar was just 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from the free-throw line.
“We’re back where we started,” Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. “This wasn’t our team tonight.”
The Lady Cardinals trailed by just three points, 28-25 at intermission, but Stephen F. Austin (7-6, 1-0) opened the second half on a 10-2 run, something the Lady Cardinals were unable to recover from.
“In the second half, we got bullied, and it felt like we gave in,” Harmony said.
Dominique Edwards led Lamar with 15 points. Edwards has scored in double figures in 11 of Lamar’s 12 games.
Porshe Roberts led SFA with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Tierany Henderson added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Ladyjacks, who got 15 points from Brittney Matthew.
Lamar returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday with a Southland Conference road game at Northwestern State. The Lady Demons opened their conference season with an impressive 78-59 home win over Sam Houston State on Thursday.
“We’re going to have a hard practice at Northwestern State on Friday,” Harmony said. “We need to have a better effort on Saturday. We have to split these games on the road.”
Saturday’s game will air live on KLVI (AM 560) and will be simulcast at www.LamarCardinals.com
Lamar opens the home portion of its Southland Conference schedule next week. Nicholls comes to the Montagne Center at 6 p.m. Jan. 9. McNeese State provides the opposition at 4 p.m. Jan. 11. Both games are the opening contests of a doubleheader, with the men’s game between the same schools to follow.
