LAKE CHARLES, La. – Kalis Loyd showed no signs of rustiness as she registered a double-double to lead the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 57-53 win over the McNeese State Cowgirls in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.

Loyd who missed last Saturday’s win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi due to injury, had 22 points and tied a career high with 15 rebounds. It was Loyd’s fifth straight performance of 20 or more points.

“I hate sitting out,” Loyd said. “I was glad I could go out there and help my team.”

Loyd’s 22 points give her 1,713 points for her career, just 17 shy of Uirannah Jackson’s school record of 1,730 points.

“I’m not really thinking of that,” Loyd said of the record. “Records are nice, but it’s more important that I focus on winning a Southland Conference championship and getting back to the NCAA Tournament.”

Saturday’s win was Lamar’s first over the Cowgirls since a 67-65 decision at McNeese State on Jan. 16, 2010, the season the Lady Cardinals went to the NCAA Tournament.

Lamar (12-4 overall, 5-1) never trailed Saturday, leading by as many as 16 points in the first half. But McNeese State (8-9, 3-3) refused to go away.

“McNeese is a tough team,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “They made some contested shots. You knew they weren’t going to fold, but we did what we needed to do.”

Dominique Edwards added 12 points and eight rebounds for Lamar. Alice Robinson finished with eight points in the win.

Ashlyn Baggett led McNeese State with 20 points, while Caitlyn Baggett added 14 points.

“I thought we played good defense,’ Tidwell said. “We held them to 31.7 percent shooting (20-of-63) for the game. They weren’t getting a lot of good looks.”

The win put Lamar in a three-way tie with Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas at the top of the Southland Conference standings.

Next up for Lamar is the long trek to Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas. The Lady Cardinals are at Oral Roberts at 5 p.m. Thursday and at Central Arkansas at 2 p.m. next Saturday. Thursday’s game will be on ESPN3 and the Central Arkansas game will be carried on KLVI. Both games will also be broadcast on www.LamarCardinals.com.
