BEAUMONT, Texas -The deep freeze that hit Southeast Texas this week seemed to have its impact on the Lamar Lady Cardinals on Thursday.
The Lady Cardinals shot just 35.4 percent from the field (29-of-82), including 0-of-18 from 3-point range as they dropped a 76-66 decision to visiting Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference women's basketball game.
"It wasn't just the 3-pointers, we missed too many layups and close shots," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "Those are shots we have to make."
Houston Baptist was anything but cold, finishing the game 32-of-57 (56.1 percent) from the field.
"We took 25 more shots than they did," Harmony said. "When you have that many more shots, you should win."
Lamar (11-9 overall, 6-3 Southland) held a 10-point lead late in the first quarter, and a 34-29 advantage at halftime. Houston Baptist (8-12, 4-5) opened the second half on a 14-4 run to take the lead for good.
"We couldn't get a stop in the second half," Harmony said. "They kept getting behind us and getting good shots. We didn't do a good job on defense in the second half."
Gia Ayers led Lamar with 18 points, while Dominique Edwards and Kiandra Bowers added 15 points apiece. Ayers had a team-high five assists to move into fourth place ahead of Barbara Hickey on LU's all-time list with 301. Kalis Loyd is third with 371.
Houston Baptist had three players post double-doubles. Shanice Steenholdt had 20 points and 15 rebounds, Monet Neal had 19 points and 19 rebounds, while Tayler Jefferson had 13 points and 12 assists.
The Lady Cardinals forced 18 turnovers while totaling a season-low eight of their own, but that wasn't enough to overcome their shooting woes as Lamar suffered its first-ever loss to the Huskies after winning the previous four meetings.
Lamar's failure to connect from downtown was the first time the Lady Cardinals did not make a 3-pointer since a 90-40 loss at Kansas on Nov. 25, 2011.
Lamar looks to get back on the winning track when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Montagne Center. That game is the opener of a doubleheader, with the Lamar men meeting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the nightcap. Both games will be shown on ESPN3 and aired live on KLVI (AM 560), with a simulcast on www.LamarCardinals.com.
