Lady Cards roll in season opener
Nov. 11, 2011
BEAUMONT, Texas - Kalis Loyd's 24 points led a balanced scoring attack as the Lamar University women's basketball team opened its season with an 82-62 non-conference win over Our Lady of the Lake at the Montagne Center on Friday night.
The Lady Cardinals (1-0) never trailed, opening the game on a 10-0 run and never looking back. Lamar held a 53-23 lead at halftime, and increased that lead to 36 points in the second half before the Saints (1-0) battled back to make the score respectable.
"I thought we played hard and got the job done in the first half," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "Our play in the last four minutes of the half was particularly impressive. In the second half, we got sloppy and didn't execute. But it's still early in the season. We'll have better games."
Jasmin Henderson was the only other Lady Cardinal to score in double figures, as she came off the bench to contribute 10 points. Carenn Baylor and Monique Whittaker added nine points apiece for Lamar. Danielle Heithoff added eight points and a game-high seven rebounds for Lamar, which outrebounded Our Lady of the Lake 59-39. Loyd had seven assists.
The Lady Cardinals don't have much time to savor their victory. They headed out of Beaumont shortly after the game to travel to College Station, where they will meet the defending national champion Aggies at 7 p.m. Saturday.
"I'm looking forward to it," Loyd said. All the pressure is on them. We have nothing to lose. We're going to give it our best shot."
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on Lamar's official athletic website: LamarCardinals.com. The Lady Cardinals return home to host Ole Miss at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
