Lady Cards Basketball Falls to Houston Jaguars 93-91 in Double OT

BEAUMONT - In their first action of the 2008-09 season the Lamar University women's basketball team fell in double overtime to the Houston Jaguars 93-91 in an exhibition at the Montagne Center.

Trailing by two points with 27 seconds to play in regulation, the Lady Cardinals tied the game on an over the shoulder pass from Brittney Williams to Ang Green who made an uncontested lay up with six seconds to play. The Jaguars could not make a desperation three pointer at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime Lamar appeared to have the game in hand with a three point lead after a pair of free throws by Emily Spickler gave them an 83-80 lead with five seconds to play. The Jaguars however would not go away as Sikeitha Sheppard drained a running three pointer at the buzzer to force a second overtime.

In the second extra period the Lady Cardinals again appeared to have the game in hand, but a string of three turnovers inside the final 1:25 of the game allowed Houston to score four points and steal the win. Lamar had one last chance to tie the game and send it to a third OT, but was not able to get off a shot in the final 11 seconds.

Darika Hill led the way for the Lady Cardinals, scoring 23 points, grabbing eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. Brittney Williams also had a solid performance, picking up a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Ang Green added 16 points off the bench. Nikki Williams gave LU four player in double digit scoring with 12 points and eight assists while Chrisan Petrovanie added nine points off the bench.

 

 

The Jaguars were led by Kashana Curry's 17 points and Sheppard's 16 points while Dominique Thomas added 15 points. Sunshine Misa-uli had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 boards while Melissa Abraham added 14 points.

The Lady Cardinals will be back in action next Wednesday when they open the regular season against Grambling State at 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
