Lady Cardinals Roll Past Alcorn State 74-59

BEAUMONT, Texas - - Behind 23 points and 12 rebounds from freshman Brittney Williams, the Lamar University Lady Cardinal basketball team notched their first win of the season, taking down Alcorn State 74-59 at the Montagne Center.

The Lady Cardinals, who improved to 1-1 on the year with the win, started pulling away from Alcorn midway through the first half, using a 19-7 run to post a 35-20 lead at halftime. Leading by three at 16-13, the run started with a three pointer by Alexis Timpone and was capped off by another Timpone triple.

After halftime the Lady Cards continued to pull away from the Lady Braves, jumping out to a 26 point lead at 55-29 on a Williams jumper with 14:01 to play.

Alcorn trimmed the Lamar lead over the final 14 minutes, but couldn't get any closer than 15 points.

Williams posted her first career double-double in the game, knocking down eight of her 14 shots from the field, and seven of eight from the free throw line. Also coming up big for LU was Timpone, who finished the game with 15 points and five assists.

Three other Lady Cards finished in double digits, as LaToya Carson, Quiana N'Joku and Shontrice Blanche each scored 10 points.

Alcorn State was led by Rasaan Powell and Shawntawnee Collins who had 17 and 16 points respectively, while Tanika Nunez added 11 points for the Lady Braves.

The Lady Cardinals out rebounded Alcorn State 47-35 in the game and passed out 13 assists to ASU's five. The Lady Braves won the turnover battle, as LU threw it away 31 times to Alcorn's 19 and ASU picked up 15 steals to Lamar's 13.
 

 

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again Saturday night when they take on the University of Denver at 4:00 p.m. in Denver, Colo.
