BEAUMONT, Texas –Dominique Edwards matched a career high with 24 points, but the Lamar Lady Cardinals dropped a 67-64 decision to visiting Rice in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon.

Edwards had 16 of Lamar’s 29 second-half points, but The Lady Cardinals (5-6) could not hold on to a 35-32 halftime lead.

“Obviously, when we play in the Montagne Center we want to win, but hopefully we learned from this game,” Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. “We have to do a better job boxing out and rebounding, and we have to make our free throws. You’re not going to win when you shoot 11-of-22 from the line.”

Gia Ayers and Shauna Long added 11 points apiece for Lamar.

Jessica Kuster led Rice with 21 points and 18 rebounds, her 10th double-double of the season. Kuster had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the second half for the Owls (6-6). Kuster had eight of Rice’s last 10 points.

“I thought we did a good job shutting Kuster down in the first half. She was just 2-of-9,” Harmony said. “We did a good job on her in the second half until the last few minutes.”

Kuster scored on layup with 8.8 seconds remaining to give the Owls a 67-64 lead. Lamar had one last chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer, but the Lady Cardinals failed to get off a shot before the buzzer.

Jasmine Goodwine had 13 points for Rice, while Reem Moussa added 12 points. Rice had a 48-30 rebounding edge. The Owls committed 27 turnovers as compared to Lamar’s 14.

“I thought we did a good job pressuring the ball and forcing turnovers,” Harmony said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.”

Lamar opens Southland Conference play with a pair of road games this week. The Lady Cardinals are at Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. Thursday and at Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Saturday. Thursday’s game will be broadcast on www.LamarCardinals.com, while Saturday’s game will air live on KLVI (AM 560), with a simulcast on LamarCardinals.com.

“We just have to regroup and get ready for conference play,” Harmony said. “We have to come out ready to play.”
