Women's basketball opens conference play at SFA

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals open their Southland Conference women's basketball schedule when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to meet Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. Thursday. Lamar (7-3) comes in off a 62-56 loss at Rice on Sunday, while Stephen F. Austin (5-6) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 73-69 home win over Tulsa on Sunday. Lamar's Kalis Loyd will move into a tie for ninth on the school's games-played list, as she will appear in her 107th game. Loyd, who leads Lamar in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg), has 1,601 career points, just 129 behind Uirannah Jackson's school record 1,730 points. Loyd has been Lamar's leading scorer in every game this season.

Lamar's strength this season has been its defense. The Lady Cardinals are ranked 46th nationally in points allowed at 54.5 points per game. The Lady Cards are third in 3-point field-goal percentage defense at 21.4 percent, 21st in field-goal percentage defense at 33.3 percent. Stephen F. Austin leads the all-time series 49-9. The Ladyjacks won both meetings last season, including a 73-64 win over Lamar in the Southland Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Katy, Texas. Loyd had 27 points for Lamar in that game. Stephen F. Austin is led by Porsha Roberts, who averages 13.0 points and 7.9 rebounds per outing. Lamar, which is in the midst of a four-game road swing, concludes that swing at 1 p.m. Saturday with a conference game at Northwestern State before hosting Southeastern Louisiana at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
