Women's basketball heads to Northwestern State

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals wrap up a four-game road swing when they face Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Saturday in a Southland Conference women's basketball game (Radio: KLVI AM 560; Internet: www.LamarCardinals.com). Lamar (8-3 overall, 1-0 conference) opened Southland play with an impressive 65-50 win at Stephen F. Austin on Thursday. Kalis Loyd poured in a season-high 28 points to lead Lamar. Loyd enters Saturday's game with 1,629 points for her career, 101 behind Uirannah Jackson's school record of 1,730 points.

Northwestern State (5-6, 1-0) started off its Southland schedule in impressive fashion Thursday with a 64-62 home victory over defending champion McNeese State. Jasmine Upchurch had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Demons. Upchurch leads Northwestern State in scoring at 11.4 points per game and in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game. Northwestern State leads the overall series 33-13, but Lamar is 8-1 against the Lady Demons since Larry Tidwell took over the LU program. Last season, Lamar won both meetings between the teams, including an 82-61 win at Northwestern State on Feb. 8, 2012, behind 24 points and seven rebounds from Loyd. Following Saturday's game, Lamar opens a three-game homestand, starting at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7 with a conference game against Southeastern Louisiana.
