Women's basketball hosts A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals look to get back on the winning track when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland Conference women's basketball game at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Montagne Center. Lamar (10-4 overall, 3-1 Southland) suffered its first home loss and first conference loss of the season when Sam Houston State rallied for a 59-57 victory on Thursday. The Lady Cardinals enter weekend in third place, a half-game behind Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas, who are both 3-0 in conference play.

Kalis Loyd had 20 points for Lamar in the loss to Sam Houston State, her fourth consecutive 20-point game. Loyd has 1,691 career points, just 39 points shy of Uirannah Jackson's school record of 1,730 points. Loyd leads Lamar in scoring at 18.6 points per game and in rebounding at 6.9 per game. Nationally, Loyd is 38th in scoring, 75th in field-goal percentage (.476) and 104th in steals per game (2.57). Lamar's Gia Ayers is 58th in assists per game at 4.8 and 91st in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.56 assists per turnover. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-13, 0-3) is on a four-game losing streak. The Islanders dropped a 68-39 decision at McNeese State on Thursday. Janae Blount leads the Islanders in scoring at 9.6 points per game. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leads the overall series 9-7, but Lamar coach Larry Tidwell is 6-3 against the Islanders. Lamar has won four of the last five meetings, including's last season's only contest, when Loyd scored 22 points in a 63-49 win at the Montagne Center on Feb. 18, 2012. Saturday's game is the opener of a hoops doubleheader. The nightcap will feature the Lamar men taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. Saturday is Elementary Appreciation Night, with free admission for all students in fifth grade or below with a proper ID or school T-shirt.
