The Lamar University women's basketball team will look to run its win streak to six games Thursday night, when they take on the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas at 6 p.m. in the Ferris Center.
This is the first ever meeting between the two teams, and is the first game the Lady Cardinal will play against a Southland Conference East Division team this season.
Lamar enters the game with an 8-8 season record and a 3-0 Southland Conference record, after their 81-49 win over the Bearkats of Sam Houston State on Saturday night at the Montagne Center.
The Lady Cardinals are led by seniors Dionne Pounds and LaToya Carson who are averaging 13.4 and 13.1 points per game respectively. Freshman Brittney Williams, who was named SLC Player of the Week this week, is averaging 12.6 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per contest, while senior Alexis Timpone and junior Shaquita Coffey have also been solid performers for the LU offense, scoring 8.5 and 7.4 points per game respectively.
As a team the Lady Cards are averaging 61.2 points per contest, while shooting .405 from the field. Lamar is shooting at a .365 average from behind the three point arc, and is shooting .685 from the free throw line, while being tied in the rebounding column with their opponents, at 38.8 boards per game.
Central Arkansas enters Thursday's contest with a 6-10 season record, and a 0-4 record in SLC play, on the heels of a 73-71 loss at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
The Sugar Bears are led by Caronica Randle who is averaging 18.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Also chipping in for UCA is Renita Dobbins, Lauren Williams and Allyson Sample who are averaging 8.9, 8.4 and 8.1 points per game respectively.
As a team UCA has been out scored 73.9 to 68.2 and out rebounded 43.5 to 40.4 while shooting .355 from the field. Central Arkansas shoots .302 from three point land and .675 from the free throw line.
After Thursday's game the Lady Cardinals will head to Natchitoches, La. for a 2 p.m. showdown with Northwestern State on Saturday.
