Tidwell goes for milestone win
Jan. 19, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University women's basketball coach Larry Tidwell goes for career win No. 100 Saturday as the Lady Cardinals travel to Central Arkansas for a 2 p.m. Southland Conference game.
Tidwell brings a 99-48 record into Saturday's contest as he looks to become just the second coach in Lady Cardinals' history to record 100 victories. Pat Park holds the Lamar record with 109 wins. Park recorded her 100th victory in her 164th game. Tidwell will coach his 148th game Saturday.
This is the second meeting between the teams this season. Central Arkansas was a 62-37 winner over Lamar in the conference opener for both teams at the Montagne Center on Jan. 7. The 37 points tied an LU mark for fewest points scored in a Southland Conference game.
Lamar owns a 6-4 lead in the all-time series, but Central Arkansas has won the last two meetings, including a 68-60 overtime victory in the semifinals of last year's Southland Conference Tournament. In the game at Central Arkansas last season, Lamar rallied from a 30-22 halftime deficit for a 60-56 win. Monique Whittaker had 16 points for Lamar.
Kalis Loyd leads Lamar (9-8 overall, 1-2 Southland) in scoring (14.9), assists (52), blocked shots (11), steals (37) and minutes played (523). She is tied with Danielle Heithoff for the team lead in rebounding (6.1).
Megan Herbert leads Central Arkansas (13-4, 3-1) in scoring at 14.9 points per game and leads the conference in rebounding at 10.4 per game.
Saturday's game is part of a hoops doubleheader. The Lamar men's team will take on Central Arkansas in the nightcap at 4 p.m. KBMT (FOX 4) will televise both games live. The women's game will be broadcast live on LamarCardinals.com, while the men's game will be aired live on KLVI (AM 560) with a simulcast on LamarCardinals.com.
After Saturday's game, Lamar returns home to host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
