Lady Cards Look For Their Best-Ever SLC Start

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball team will attempt to post its best-ever start in Southland Conference play when it hosts Sam Houston State at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday in the Montagne Center. The first 250 fans will receive a drink bottle courtesy of 5-Point Credit Union. The game will be broadcast live online at www.lamarcardinals.com. Lamar (15-4 overall, 5-0 conference) is tied with the 2007-08 Lady Cardinals squad that won its first five SLC games. That team advanced to the Southland Conference finals. Lamar's best record in conference play came in the 1990-91 season as members of the American South Conference, when the Lady Cardinals went 12-0 in conference play en route to a 29-4 season, advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Lamar junior guard Jenna Plumley continues to remain in the top-20 nationally in three categories. Plumley is ninth in 3-point field goals (3.3 per game), 17th in assists (5.8 per game) and 19th in steals (3.0 per game). Teammate Trashanna Smith is 16th in blocked shots, averaging 2.5 per game. As a team, the Lady Cardinals are among the top squads in the country when it comes to lighting up the scoreboard, ranking 26th at 74.4 points per game. Lamar's average of 7.4 3-pointers per game is 25th in the nation. Lamar has won five consecutive games and is coming off an 82-59 win at Texas State. Freshman Kalis Loyd, the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week, had career highs of 28 points and six assists in that win. Sam Houston State (5-11, 2-2) is coming off a 77-75 overtime victory over UT Arlington. Lamar leads the overall series with Sam Houston State, 24-21.
