Jan. 27, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball team looks to get back to the .500 mark in Southland Conference play as they travel to Thibodaux, La., to take on the Nicholls Colonels at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
Lamar (10-9, overall, 2-3 Southland) comes off Wednesday's 58-56 win over visiting Northwestern State as Larry Tidwell became just the second coach in Lady Cardinals' history to reach the 100-victory plateau. Tidwell is nine victories behind Pat Park's 109 wins on the program's all-time chart. Lamar had three players score in double figures, led by Kalis Loyd's 14 points. Monique Whittaker and Brateicka Mock had 11 points apiece. Gia Ayers set career highs with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots in the win.
Loyd leads Lamar in scoring (15.5), rebounding (6.2), assists 58, blocked shots (11), steals (42), field goal percentage (.471) and minutes played (593).
A win over the Colonels would put LU into third place in the East Division, pushing them past Nicholls (10-9, 3-3).
Nicholls has already equaled last season's Southland Conference win total and its 10 overall wins are the most since the 2001-02 team went 11-16. Leslie Sumar leads the Colonels in scoring at 16.3 ppg. Alisha Allen averages 14.2 points and team-leading 6.6 rebounds per game.
The Colonels have lost three of their last four, including a 68-53 loss at McNeese State on Monday night. Lamar leads the all-time series 17-12, and has captured the last seven meetings. Tidwell is 6-0 all-time against the Colonels.
