RIM TO RIM WITH LADY CARDINAL BASKETBALL
Jan. 29, 2008
LamarCardinals.com ran an up- tempo pressure defense to trap the quick, elusive, and evasive Vickie Toney so we could get her thoughts on the upcoming season, her role on the team, mentor's that have been important in her life, and moving from the windy city of Chicago to Beaumont. Vickie has been a leader on the floor and a catalyst in the weight room as the super sophomore prepares for a break-out season. LC: When you think of Chicago, you have to think of the great pizza in that city - what are your favorite ingredients? VT: If it's not a good pepperoni Jumbo Slice then that good ole Italian Sausage Pizza or a pizza with both pepperoni and sausage LC: When you leave Chicago to travel to Beaumont, what are the things that you miss the most? VT: Chicago style Hot Dogs... or should I say my huge family! LC: You are getting the reputation for being one of the most intense workers in the weight room, how and why? VT: Well, we're striving to be the best as a team... It starts with us as individuals wanting to better ourselves in order to better the unit. Our tam goal keeps us going LC: From previous conversations, you have mentioned a mentor from John Hope HS that has helped you along the way, who is she and how big of an impact has she, had on your life? VT: My white mother Miss (Paula) Novak-she's so motivating, inspiring, and easy going. She's made my college transition a lot smoother from staying up late helping with papers or being up early just to say good morning and have a nice day. LC: Who is the player you tried to model your game after as a young player growing up? VT: Everybody loves Mike, but Jason Kidd, Cynthia Cooper and the Hood Hoop Stars. LC: What was your favorite game last season? VT: Playing against No. 3 OU at the Montagne Center. LC: What are your favorite music style and your favorite artist? VT: I pretty much would listen to anything with a nice rhythm and beat. I don't just have one favorite artist, but I really like Lil Wayne
LC: What do you like most about playing point guard? VT: Being an extension of the coach, making my teammates better, running the court faster and feeling in control, freedom, and having fun. LC: What is the best advice that you would give an incoming freshman student athlete? VT: Responsibly, Discipline, commitment with academics, athletics then everything else. |
