Jan. 29, 2013
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals look to end their two-game losing streak when they host Northwestern State in a Southland Conference women's basketball game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Montagne Center.
Lamar (12-6 overall, 5-3 Southland) is in a three-way tie for third place in the conference with McNeese State and Oral Roberts. The Lady Cardinals are two games behind league-leading Sam Houston State and one game behind Central Arkansas. Northwestern State (7-11, 3-5) is in eighth place in the 10-team conference. The top eight teams qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament set for Katy, Texas, in March.
Lamar and Northwestern State both come into Thursday's game off of overtime losses on Saturday. Lamar dropped a 67-62 decision at Central Arkansas, while Northwestern State fell to visiting Stephen F. Austin by a 57-50 score.
"We didn't play well in our loss at Oral Roberts, but I thought we came back and played well at Central Arkansas, but we came up just a little bit short," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "We just have to learn how to finish.
"We're still in a good shape. This league is so balanced. We just have to position ourselves for the tournament."
Lamar is led by senior Kalis Loyd, who averages 18.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Loyd became the Lady Cardinals' all-time leading scorer Saturday, passing Uirannah Jackson at the top of the LU chart. Loyd poured in a game-high 25 points in the loss to give her 1,749 points to pass Jackson's total of 1,730.
Northwestern State is led by Jasmine Upchurch, who averages 11.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. Northwestern State leads the overall series 33-14, but Lamar has won the last eight meetings. Tidwell is 9-1 against Northwestern State, the most wins he has against any team. Lamar was a 71-68 winner at Northwestern State on Jan. 5, as Loyd had 20 points and Dominique Edwards had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Tidwell, who is the winningest coach in program history with a 118-61 mark, will coach his 180th Lamar game Thursday, breaking the record of 179 set by Pat Park.
Thursday's game will be aired live on www.LamarCardinals.com. It's the opening act of a doubleheader, with the Lamar men taking on Northwestern State in the nightcap. The Lady Cardinals host Stephen F. Austin in another hoops twinbill starting at 4 p.m. Saturday.
