BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University women's basketball forward Trashanna Smith was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 31, 2010, for her efforts in wins over Sam Houston State and UTSA.

Smith, a junior from Houston, Texas, had double-doubles in both victories. Smith had 19 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high six assists in an 86-68 win over Sam Houston State on Jan. 27. She followed that game with a career-high 22 points to go along with 12 rebounds in a 69-60 triumph over UTSA as the Lady Cardinals (17-4 overall, 7-0 conference) ran their winning streak to seven games.

Smith is the third Lady Cardinal to earn Player of the Week honors this season. Jenna Plumley received the award twice and Kalis Loyd captured the honor last week.

Lamar's seven-game winning streak is the longest since it won seven straight in the 1994-95 season. The Lady Cardinals are guaranteed to finish with a winning record, giving them three straight winning seasons since Lamar had four straight winning campaigns from 1988-89 to 1991-92.

The Lady Cardinals, who are in first place in the West Division of the SLC, travel to Conway, Ark., to meet East Division co-leader Central Arkansas (15-5, 5-2) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. That game will be aired live on the Lamar athletics Web site: www.lamarcardinals.com.

Following Wednesday's game, Lamar will be at Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. Feb. 6. The next home game is set for 2:05 p.m. Feb. 13 against Texas State at the Montagne Center. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715 or visit www.lamarcardinals.com.
