BEAUMONT, Texas -
The Lamar University women's basketball team travels to UTSA for a crucial Southland Conference clash at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Lady Cardinals (10-11 overall, 2-5 Southland) find themselves in a three-way tie for ninth place in the overall conference standings, a half-game behind eighth-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the eighth and final spot in next month's Southland Conference Tournament. UTSA (7-13, 3-4) enters the weekend in seventh place overall.
Lamar has dropped two straight, including Wednesday's 69-61 home loss to Southeastern Louisiana. UTSA has also dropped two in a row, and comes in off of a 50-41 loss at UT Arlington on Wednesday.
Kalis Loyd continues to lead Lamar in most categories, including scoring (14.8), rebounding (6.5), assists (62), blocks (12), steals (43) and minutes played (650). Monique Whittaker averages 10.0 points per game for the Lady Cardinals. Loyd is eighth on Lamar's all-time scoring list with 1,241 points.
Kamra King leads UTSA in scoring at 8.9 points per game. Mannasha Bell leads UTSA in rebounding, pulling down an average of 7.8 per game.
UTSA coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair, goes for her 200th win as coach of the Roadrunners. Rippetoe-Blair is 199-146 at UTSA and 306-190 overall.
Following Saturday's game, Lamar is at Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Wednesday before hosting Nicholls at 2 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Montagne Center in the annual "Pink Zone" game to raise awareness for breat cancer research.
