BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball team can clinch the top seed in the upcoming State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament with a win over visiting Nicholls at 2:05 p.m. Saturday at the Montagne Center.
Lamar (22-7 overall, 12-3 conference) is tied with Stephen F. Austin for the best record in the conference. The Lady Cardinals hold the tiebreaker over Stephen F. Austin by way of their victory at SFA earlier this season. Earning the top seed would guarantee Lamar a spot in the Women's NIT should the Lady Cardinals not receive a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Lamar would win the conference title outright with a win and a Stephen F. Austin loss at UTSA on Saturday.
This is the only meeting of the season between Lamar and Nicholls. The Colonels (4-23, 1-14) failed to qualify for the conference tournament for the fifth consecutive season.
Lamar's Jenna Plumley continues to rank among the national leaders in 3-poitners (seventh at 3.3 per game and assists (ninth at 6.3 per game). Plumley needs six assists to break the Lamar single-season record of 189 set by Ramona Jones in 1992-93.
Prior to the game, Lamar will honor its three graduating senior players: Brittney Williams, Ashley Crawford and Darika Hill. Williams set the program record for games played when she competed in her 118th game Wednesday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Tickets for Saturday's game are available at the Montagne Center box office, online at www.lamarcardinals.com or by calling (409) 880-1715. The game will also be broadcast live at the Lamar athletics Web site: www.lamarcardinals.com.
