Women's basketball heads to Nicholls on Thursday
March 6, 2013
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals close out the regular season with Southland Conference women's basketball road games at Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana this week.
Lamar (19-8 overall, 11-5 Southland) is in third place in the conference, one game behind league-leading Sam Houston State and a half-game behind Oral Roberts. The third- and fourth-place teams get first-round byes in next week's Southland Conference Tournament, while the top two teams get byes into the semifinals.
Lamar will take on Nicholls at 5:30 p.m. Thursday before taking on Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m. Saturday.
"We still have a chance to win the regular-season championship, but we need some help" Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "Our goal is to get better, win these two games and get ready for a run in the conference tourney."
This will be Lamar's second meeting with Nicholls (17-10, 9-7). The Lady Cardinals edged the Colonels 59-57 at the Montagne Center on Feb. 19 behind 24 points and 10 rebounds from Kalis Loyd.
"Nicholls is a very athletic team," Tidwell said. "They play hard, and they shoot the ball well. We are going to have to play good defense against them."
Loyd leads Lamar in scoring at 17.7 points per game and in rebounding at 7.2 boards per contest. Dominique Edwards is second on the Lady Cardinals in both categories, averaging 8.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
Alisha Allen's 14.9 points per game leads the Colonels in scoring. KK Babin averages 13.0 points per game.
Lamar leads the overall series with Nicholls 19-13. Tidwell is 8-1 against the Colonels.
Thursday's game will be broadcast online at www.LamarCardinals.com. Saturday's game at Southeastern Louisiana will air live on KLVI (AM 560) with a simulcast on LamarCardinals.com.
