Women's basketball sets sights on Southeastern Louisiana
March 8, 2013
HAMMOND, La. - If the Lamar Lady Cardinals want to be guaranteed of a first-round bye in next week's Southland Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, they can follow the words of the late Al Davis: "Just win, baby!" A win at Southeastern Louisiana in Saturday's 2 p.m. regular-season finale would guarantee the Lady Cardinals (19-9 overall, 11-6 Southland) a top-four finish in the conference, and a first-round bye. A loss to the Lady Lions (11-17, 4-13), who have already been eliminated from tournament contention, could drop Lamar as low as fifth, and mean a first-round game on Wednesday. Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi have been eliminated from tournament contention. "We just have to go out and take care of business," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. The Lady Cardinals dropped an 84-77 decision at Nicholls on Thursday, while Southeastern Louisiana fell to McNeese State 79-55. Lamar enters Saturday tied for third with McNeese State with 11-6 conference marks. Sam Houston State (13-4 SLC) is in first and is guaranteed at least a share of the regular-season title. Oral Roberts is in second place with a 12-5 league mark. Kalis Loyd leads Lamar in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (7.2). Dominique Edwards, who had a double-double against Nicholls, is second in both categories at 8.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
