Ang Green Inducted Into Freshman Honor Society

May 12, 2009

Lamar University freshman Ang Green made an immediate impact on the basketball court this season as the leading scorer off the bench for the Lady Cardinals. Her accomplishments in the classroom however, have possibly made an ever greater impact.

Green, a native of Silsbee, Texas, was inducted as a member of the Phi Eta Sigma national honor society for freshman after an exceptional fall semester in the classroom.

"Ang Green has stepped on our campus and made an immediate impact, both on the court and in the classroom," said head coach Larry Tidwell. "That says a lot about her work ethic, her passion to succeed in everything she takes on, her educational background at Silsbee High School, and having a supportive and caring family. She is the total package!"

The oldest and largest freshman honor society, Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois on March 22, 1923. It now has more than 350 chapters throughout the United States and more than 900,000 inducted members. All first-year students are eligible to join who have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the close of any full-time curricular period during their first year in college.

Green met the requirements and earned the distinction.

"It means a lot to me," she said. "This is a very prestigious honor, and not everyone can be a part of this honor society. I will be a member for life, so it really is a big honor."

Green averaged 8.8 points per game while playing in all 31 contests for the Lady Cardinals this season. When asked how she balanced her schoolwork with the amount of hard work she was putting in on the court, she said it just came natural.

"Sometimes it can be challenging, but I managed to study whenever I needed to," she said. "When we were travelling it made it a little tough to have a normal routine, but I always got my work done. It's really been a good year."
