BEAUMONT, Texas -Lamar University women's basketball coach Robin Harmony finalized her staff for the upcoming season by hiring native Texan Lejon Wright Sr. as an assistant coach.
Wright comes to Lamar from Pratt Community College, where he served as an assistant coach of the women's basketball team, which went 20-11 last season, its best mark in 13 years. Wright previously served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Navarro College and as head girls basketball coach at Eastern Hills High School. In addition, he also spent three years as head coach of the DFW ELITE Girls Basketball Club in Dallas.
"Lejon is a tremendous recruiter and he has numerous contacts throughout Texas," Harmony said. "He's enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I am happy to give a young coach an opportunity at Division I."
A standout athlete at Eastern Hills High School in Fort Worth, Wright attended Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado on a full scholarship before earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Wright also starred in track, being part of the AAU 18-and-under national champion 4x100 relay team.
Wright is currently finishing his requirements for a master's degree in education from Concordia University in Austin.
"I'm excited to be at Lamar, which is one of the best programs in the Southland Conference," Wright said. "I look forward to working with a great coaching staff and helping the Lady Cardinals become even more successful."
The Lady Cardinals went 18-13 last season, sharing the Southland Conference regular-season title and competing in the WNIT, Lamar's fourth appearance in a national postseason tournament in the last five years.
